The Journey -
The title, The Journey, was chosen because it represents my love of animals running on African plains, the discovery of new ideas and symbolism from other cultures and the beauty and diversity that exists still in our world.
As a textile artist, the Journey Collection emerged from a book I illustrated called, "The Alphabet Atlas." In this book, I created one-of-a-kind textile art to describe each country in the book.
The first collection would take the quilts I did for Kenya and Zimbabwe and create an authentic line from them.
In a way, it was opposite to the way most fabric collections are created and perfect for the way a quilt artist works. As quilt artists, we use a myriad of prints and textures to create the look we want in our work and sometimes that is going a bit outside of the box and combining fabrics that are not in a “decorator vein”. The result to us was much more exciting.
While working on The Journey, it was of utmost importance to have the correct flora and fauna of Africa. We were diligent in working to keep some flowers and animals whole and able to be cut out for appliqué for the quilt artist.
