Did you know that buttons for clothes were used for ornamentation (not closure) more than 2000 years before Christ?  Buttons were a symbol of wealth and privilege.  They were added to robes and clothing as a sign of success. The earliest buttons were made of seashells and stones.  Buttons for clothes fastening did not become popular until tight fitting fashion became the rage in the 1200s and 1300s in Europe.
