Learn to knit socks! In four lessons

For intermediate beginners. Should already know how to cast on, knit and purl.

Lesson 1)   Learn the basics of sock construction. Learn which tools and yarn are best for socks. Choose yarn for your project. Cast on your first sock. Begin work on the leg of your sock.

Lesson 2)   Turning the heel: What does this mean? Two methods to choose from.

Lesson 3)   Working the instep to the toe.

Lesson 4)   Working the toe and grafting the toe together.

Knitting class supply list

Basic tools

            What you probably already have in your knitting bag:

                        Measuring tape

                        Stitch and needle gauge

                        Needle point protectors

                        Wool needle (for grafting and darning)

            Necessary for knitting socks:

                        4-5 double pointed needles (a set)

                                         OR

                        2 circular needles (same size)

                        (Typically size 2, 3, or 4 works for sock yarn, depending on your gauge)

                        Other sizes might be appropriate, depending upon which yarn you choose.

            Stitch markers (the type that open are versatile and can be placed anywhere in  your work)                        

            Other fun items to consider:

                        Stitch/row counter

                        “All-purpose” needle-hook combo (for picking up dropped stitches, etc.)

                                    OR a small crochet hook

                        Cable needle (in case you wish to put a cable in the leg of your sock)

            Nice extravagances if you decide to get serious about sock knitting:

                        Sheepskin slipper sock soles

                        Sock form

            Darning egg or “mushroom” (to mend those special socks when they get worn spots)
